Crispa-Toyota battles in the 70s (1975-1979)

The final count was 65 to 58 for Crispa, but in the PBA’s first five seasons during the 1970s, basketball fans were treated and witness 80 Crispa-Toyota battles and the count was 42 to 38 in favor of Crispa (18-16 for the Redmanizers in the finals series).

As I updated, first, let me thank the Crispa-Toyota blogsite for providing the complete results in the eliminations and their semifinal games. The records shows in the PBA’s first season in 1975, Crispa won twice in the eliminations, 139-133 on May 10, and 143-139 in OT on June 8, while Toyota winning over Crispa twice in the semifinals, 106-104 on July 15, and 114-102 on July 20. After the first conference championship won by Toyota, 3-1 over Crispa, the Comets would defeat the Redmanizers three straight times in the second conference, winning 110-108 in the eliminations, 99-94 in the round of six, and 109-105 in Iloilo City on November 7 in the first round of the semifinals. Two nights later in Cebu, Crispa finally snap a six-game losing streak to Toyota with a 108-102 win. After a 2-1 Crispa loss to Toyota in the second conference finals, the Redmanizers won four of their next six matches with the Comets, including a 3-2 victory in the All-Philippine championship.

Toyota repeated over Crispa, 99-94, in the round of six, in the 1975 PBA Second conference.

The following year in 1976, the two rivals were tied at two wins and two losses in the eliminations and semifinals of the first two conferences. Their first meeting in the first conference took place on May 4 with Crispa winning 105-95 and dealt the Comets their first loss of the season. The Redmanizers repeated with a 121-97 victory in Cebu City on June 6. The Comets bounced back with two close wins over Crispa in the semifinals, 104-102 on June 24 and 103-101 on July 1. In the second conference, Toyota won their first meeting, 98-95 on September 14. The Redmanizers scored convincing victories in their next two matches, 123-97 in the last day of eliminations on October 26, and 113-94 in the first round of the semifinals five nights later on October 31. Toyota prevailed in the second round, 109-102 on November 10, in a finals preview with both teams already clinch a championship berth. As we all know, Crispa won the grandslam that year with 3-1, 3-1 and 3-2 series victory over their arch rival Toyota.

The 1977 first conference, the All-Filipino, turn out to be the worst time Toyota had in their rivalry with Crispa, besides the much-publicized rumble in the opening game of the season on April 17, which was won by Crispa, 122-121, the Tamaraws were shutout by the Redmanizers, 4-0, in that conference. Crispa still holds the edge over Toyota in the second conference (Open), 3-2, they split their meetings in the semis with Crispa winning, 121-116 on November 4, and Toyota forcing a playoff for the right to meet U-Tex in the finals with a 104-92 victory in the second round. The Redmanizers won the do-or-die match, 90-87.

Crispa’s first round meeting with Toyota in the 1977 Open, a 107-99 victory.

In one of Toyota’s best season in the year 1978, the Redmanizers still had the upperhand, 5 to 4. The difference was in the second conference, the Redmanizers had won three straight games (two victories; 129-108 in the first round of eliminations, and 136-123 in the first round of semis).

From a 2-2 deadlock and a 3-2 Crispa win in the 1979 All-Filipino Conference, the Tamaraws took two victories over the Redmanizers in the 1979 Open Conference eliminations, 120-110 and 107-104, and were 3-1 over Crispa in the second conference.

The third conference, which was a short tournament in the 1970s and always started in the last week of November up until December, Toyota had the edge over Crispa in their lone match up prior to a finale, the Tamaraws won from 1976-1978, and Crispa in 1975 and 1979.
