1979 PBA Invitational Championship

Six teams are qualified in the PBA Third Conference of the 1979 season which opens on November 20, they are Crispa Walk Tall Jeans, Toyota Tamaraws, U/tex Wranglers, Royal Tru-Orange, Gilbey’s Gin and Great Taste.

Some results i’ve research on:

November 20 – Toyota won in the opener against Gilbey’s Gin, 125-120, despite the Gins’ import Dean Tolson tallying 51 points. The second game of the night had Walk Tall Jeans routing Open Conference champion Royal Tru-Orange, 116-88, Bernard Harris of the Jeans Makers scored 31 points.

November 22 – Gilbey’s Gin nips U/tex, 134-132, Larry McNeill poured in 50 points for the Gins Makers. Toyota won against Great Taste, 137-113 in the second game with Bruce “Sky” King scoring 46 points while his counterpart Jim Hearns of the Discoverers scored 40 points.

November 24 – Walk Tall Jeans beat Great Taste, 105-99, for their second win. U/tex bounces back with a 113-98 win over Royal Tru-Orange.

November 27 – Gilbey’s Gin handed Walk Tall Jeans its first loss in a 115-107 victory as Dean Tolson scored 42 points. Toyota beats Royal Tru-Orange, 88-81 in the second game as Francis Arnaiz reach the 5,000 career points to become the second player to achieve the said feat.

November 29 – U/tex’ 122-110 win over Great Taste, Darryl Smith had 42 points for the Discoverers. Royal defeats Gilbey’s, 128-105 in the nightcap.

On December 6, the last day of the one-round robin, Gilbey’s routs Great Taste, 148-114, Tolson scored 55 points while McNeill added 40 points, Smith topscored for the Discoverers with 33 points. In the second game, Walk Tall Jeans beats U/tex, 114-106, Harris had 27 markers for the Jeans Makers, James Robinson hit 45 points for the Wranglers.

The final standings were Crispa and Toyota with 4 wins and 1 loss, Gilbey’s Gin at 3-2, U/tex Wranglers with 2-3 and at the bottom were Royal Tru-Orange and Great Taste with a lone win and four losses.

Crispa and Toyota are playing in the finals for the second time in the 1979 season, the championship results as follows:

December 8 – Crispa blast Toyota, 129-101, Bernard Harris topscored for Crispa with 38 points, Robert Jaworski led the depleted-Tamaraws with 23 points.

December 11 – Toyota return the favor in Game 2 by winning in the same 28-point margin over Crispa, 123-95. One of the two imports of Crispa, Irv Chatman, was forced to sit out reportedly due to a bum stomach. The Redmanizers found themselves facing an intact Toyota lineup by virtue of the management decision to reactivate Ramon Fernandez, Abe King and Estoy Estrada, the three players suspended at the start by coach Dante Silverio.

December 13 – With the series tied at 1-1 apiece, Toyota beats Crispa, 107-102, Andrew Fields scored 29 points for the Tamaraws while Philip Cezar hit 30 points for Walk Tall.

December 15 – Robert Jaworski scored 30 points to lead Toyota to a 98-87 win over Crispa to capture the Invitational crown and the Tamaraws’ 6th PBA title.

In the series for third place, U/tex completed a 3-0 sweep over Gilbey’s Gin. The scores were 129-123, 122-119 and 123-115.
